The Institute of Molecular Systems Biology (IMSB) is in the Department of Biology at the ETH Zurich. The research groups at IMSB share the same mission: we all work to develop, apply and teach the science of Systems Biology. The Computational Biology group, headed by Manfred Claassen focuses on mathematical and computational approaches such as artificial intelligence techniques to contribute to this mission.
The Computational Biology group aim at elucidating the composition of heterogeneous cell populations and how these implement function in the context of cancer and immune biology by jointly evaluating single cell and genome wide measurements. It is an open question how to extract the relevant biological information from these novel data sources and to comprehensively, yet concisely and intelligibly describe the dynamics and function of heterogeneous cell populations at molecular detail. Our lab develops machine learning and artificial intelligence methods to accomplish this goal and predominantly applies these in the context of ongoing collaborations with experimentalists in the fields of immunology and cancer biology.
