Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory

The Engineering Design and Computing laboratory focuses on developing cutting-edge computational models, methods and tools that enable the design of innovative and complex engineered systems and products. A secondary aim is to automate design and fabrication processes. The research is interdisciplinary combining engineering, design and computing, including applied Artificial Intelligence (AI). We consider early conceptual design phases through to the fabrication of novel solutions. Current research topics include Computational Design Synthesis (CDS), Design Automation, Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO), Structural Topology Optimization, Design for Additive Manufacture (DfAM) and 4D Printing. A variety of engineering areas are investigated including design of advanced structures, machines, dynamic systems and soft robotics. These areas are then applied in a wide range of industries including consumer products, machine design, biomedical, automotive, aerospace and buildings.
